Planter Cell Tray for Disaster Recovery

Rebuilding Farms After Storms

Nido is a planter cell tray, designed to be used to be used during disaster recovery.

In 2017, Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico and destroyed the majority of farms and their infrastructure.

Afterwards, Puerto Rico was importing 95% of its food.

As Puerto Ricans seek greater food independence, farms need to be able to recover quickly after a future disaster.

Cell trays allow seedlings to be grown separately in the first few weeks after a storm, so that farmers can prioritize rebuilding their homes and farm.

Plastic Tray

+ Easy to fill and reuse

-Experiences transplant shock from weaker root system

Soil Block

+No transplant shock and seedlings grow quicker

-More time consuming and harder to use

Compostable Trays

+No transplant shock and breaks down in soil

-Trays are single use only

Compostable trays offer the benefits of both plastic trays and soil blocks, with their drawback of single use only being acceptable in an emergency situation.
